Bowhunter and physical trainer, Josh Bowmar, brought a great deal of negative attention to himself after his wife uploaded a controversial video. The video shows Bowmar using a large thrown spear to kill a massive Canadian black bear in Edmonton, Alberta.
The 7-foot long homemade spear plunged into the Canadian black bear from about 40 feet away, and Bowmar is reported to have left the hunting site without properly tagging the bear, or ending its life humanely. The Alberta Ministry of Environment and Parks alleges Bowmar left the bear, which only ran about 60 yards after the spear lodged in its side, overnight and returned to collect his quarry in the morning.
The Ministry’s chair is quoted saying that, “The type of archaic hunting seen in the recently posted video of a hunter spearing a Canadian black bear, allegedly in Alberta, is unacceptable.” The CBC has also reported the Department of Fish and Wildlife has been ordered to investigate the matter. In the meantime, the fallout has been severe, with Bowmar’s wife, accused of uploading the video to YouTube, has been released of Under Armor sponsorship, while Bowmar has a received a litany of hate mail from activists and animal rights groups.
