An observant Jacksonville driver placed maybe the strangest call to 911 that the Clay County Sheriff’s Office had ever heard before: the eyewitness had just flagged down a car with a bald eagle struggled to remove itself from the car’s radiator grille. Rescue officials responded to the call a short while later and were amazed to see the symbol of America squirming to get out of the tight squeeze. With some help, they were able to extract the bird from its confines and transfer him to a bird sanctuary called BEAKS on nearby Tablot Island. Clay County officials believed the reason the bird had become trapped was because of the strong violent winds of the recent hurricane, and named the eagle Matthew in honor of his plight. Matthew reportedly sustained no injuries as a result of the incident.
