On the fourth Saturday of every September, National Hunting and Fishing Day (NHF) recognizes generations of sportsmen and women for their contributions to the conservation of our nation’s rich sporting heritage and natural resources.
One of the main goals of National Hunting and Fishing Day is to recruit new hunters and anglers by encouraging participation and increasing public awareness of the connection between hunting, angling, and conservation. Through self-imposed fees and excise taxes, sportsmen and women have raised more than $57 billion–that’s more than $100,000 every 30 minutes being raised for conservation. NHF Day is the largest, most effective grassroots movement ever undertaken to promote outdoor sports and conservation.

Bass Pro Shops Founder Johnny Morris’ Wonders of Wildlife National Museum and Aquarium in Springfield, MO serves as the official home for NHF Day!
Launched by Congress in 1971, President Nixon signed the first-ever proclamation of National Hunting & Fishing Day on May 2, 1972, writing:
“I urge all citizens to join with outdoor sportsmen in the wise use of our natural resources and in ensuring their proper management for the benefit of future generations.”
NHF Day recognizes hunters and anglers for their wildlife and conservation leadership and has evolved into an opportunity to celebrate hunting, target shooting, and fishing with national, state, regional, and local organizations hosting related events.

Each year, thousands of people attend NHF Day events throughout the country honoring hunting and fishing’s wildlife and fisheries conservation contributions. Ducks Unlimited is proud to be a part of this traditional day, one of the most effective campaigns recognizing hunters and anglers and their conservation dedication.
“Hunters and anglers are our country’s leading conservationists. Their support is crucial to wildlife and fisheries habitat conservation efforts around the world. National Hunting and Fishing Day is a celebration of that spirit and our hunting and fishing heritage,” said DU CEO Adam Putnam. “We all could use more time spent outdoors. Thanks to the steadfast support of our volunteers and partners, like Bass Pro Shops, DU has boots on the ground, every day, restoring and conserving millions of acres of wetlands habitat across North America for everyone to enjoy.”
