If you’ve ever heard the sounds a bull elk makes, it’s kind of terrifying. It sounds like the Ringwraiths from The Lord of the Rings. According to National Geographic, despite their large size, , male elk produce shrill rutting calls known as bugles. They  produce the eerie noises by whistling and roaring through their vocal cords at the same time.
