The Kentuckian who operates the Off Road/Off Grid channel has made quite a life for himself building unique and ccontraptions which allow him to make life completely off-the-grid not only viable but completely sustainable. By rewiring the alternator from a Chevy Cavalier and placing a stator around the electromagnetic rotor, then having a water wheel suspended on two automotive wheel bearings which power a bicycle chain and wheel, he ends up with a system which generates 40 volts of electricity via running water. He uses the current from a nearby stream to power his small home in the backcountry. Pretty ingenious, no?
