Joe Franz gained national attention in 2014 after harvesting what’s believed to be the biggest buck to ever be taken on video. Franz had caught the deer on camera and had been pursing it for months. “I’ve hunted for 40 years and never even seen a deer come close to the deer famously named Palmer.”
Franz was able to harvest the deer on his 80-acre farm in Marion County, Iowa. The exciting hunt was all caught on video (below), from the very first sightings of “Palmer” to the final shot that brought him down.
However, baiting in Iowa is illegal. Franz claims his hunt was completely legal but the Iowa Department of Natural Resources didn’t agree. Franz has been charged with four counts of “hunting over bait.” According to Des Moines Register, the law prohibits hunters from using grain, vegetables, fruit or salt blocks to attract wildlife.
If found guilty, the violations could cost him upwards of $200 for each count.
