Because of its hilly terrain, the success rate of an elk hunt on the Charles M. Russell Wildlife Refuge in Montana is about fifteen percent. Outdoor Life’s editor-in-chief Andrew MacKean’s elk hunt almost fell into that dreaded 85% after the massive bull they had been stalking all afternoon disappeared from view as he and his buddy re-positioned themselves on the hillside. Just as they set up next to some trees, they spotted the bull about 50 yards away, straight down the hill. MacKean lined up the shot and loosed it in the blink of an eye before the bull got away again. They found their quarry several yards down the hill near some juniper where they marveled at the sheer size of their kill, putting them firmly in that coveted 15%.
