Fernandina, an island in the Galapagos chain, is positively teeming with snakes. Racer snakes in particular dominate the volcanic island’s rocky sands. These snakes share their home with many other creatures and reptiles, but the racers prefer one prey above all else: iguanas. In this clip from the BBC’s latest entry into their Planet Earth series, a young iguana learns the hard way that he cannot turn his back on Fernandina’s snakes for even a moment. After one racer attempts to attack, the young iguana runs for dear life from an army of snakes who had been hiding in the nearby rocks. It may look like a chase scene from a big-budget Hollywood thriller, but this is Mother Nature in all her glory and brutality.
