Iowa Teen Shoots Mountain Lion in Fear of Attack

This past weekend, a teenager out hunting deer with his family near Akron, Iowa, shot a female mountain lion. The boy, Jake Altena, heard movement nearby and readied his Savage bolt-action 20 gauge shotgun. The lion came toward him and he pulled the trigger, fatally wounding the animal.

Mountain lions are not a protected species in this state, and this is the 5th time a mountain lion has been killed in Iowa, according to state records.
