It’s surprisingly simple, but few people know how to prevent a poison ivy rash before it begins. The trick isn’t avoiding the ivy, which is basically impossible if you spend most of your time in the woods, but rather removing the true cause of the rash. Urushiol oil is an invisible greasy residue excreted from the leaves poison ivy, oak, and sumac and it’s the true cause of those painfully itchy blisters. It’s similar to axle grease, and needs to be removed in a similar fashion. Just taking a shower isn’t enough, make sure you use a strong oil displacement like dish soap and plenty of friction.
