Poaching or self defense? Little girl’s hunt causes controversy

This father-daughter trip started as a elk hunt. After they separated to hunt different areas, the father heard a gun shot. He assumed his daughter had shot an elk, but as he approached he realized what had been slowly creeping up on her.

I knew it was stalking me,” she said. “I had a feeling right before that something was watching me. After I shot, I kept the gun on it the whole time. Dad ran back and he thought I had shot an elk. I told him I had shot a cat and he got real emotional.”

The animal was shot without a tag so she and her father feared repercussions from the game warden. Luckily officials did not give her a citation because her kill was in self defense, but the mountain lion’s body was confiscated by the wardens. Two days later she was able to get her first large elk. Congratulation to Alyssa Caldwell for her successful and rare hunting encounters.
