This fall, beginner hunters, Katey and Christen, wanted to try a DIY hunt for pronghorn in central New Mexico. This was the perfect next step along their journey into hunting. It built on lessons learned from their first hunt for mule deer hunt in Oregon a year ago, and a blackbuck hunt earlier last year.
Central New Mexico terrain is fantastic for both novice and experienced hunters alike. It’s beautiful high desert with rolling hills, and pockets of yucca and cactus that provide both cover for pronghorn and vantage points for hunters. For pronghorn, this terrain means constant vigilance, as the wide-open spaces leave them exposed to predators and hunters alike, but they can slip into the hills and the yucca to disappear. These animals are known for their speed and sharp vision, making hunting them a test of skill when trying to get close enough to take a shot.
A DIY Adventure: Preparation and Gear
This hunt marked a significant milestone for Katey and Christen, who decided to take on the challenge without a guide. Their previous hunts had taught them valuable lessons-the physically demanding mule deer hunt tested their endurance, while the blackbuck hunt gave them insights into the importance of preparation and marksmanship. Armed with this experience, they prepared meticulously for the pronghorn adventure.
Practice sessions at 300 yards ensured accuracy and familiarity with equipment, reflecting the growth in their skills since their earlier hunts. This preparation was vital, as pronghorn hunts often require longer range shots than a typical whitetail hunt.
Scouting the Land and Spotting the Herds
Scouting began in earnest, with Katey and Christen glassing from elevated points to locate herds. On scouting day, they got a great tip that the antelope on this ranch – that’s also home to cattle – get used to seeing trucks. So, they used the truck for stealthy scouting at a distance, taking advantage of their optics, before heading out on foot for the stalk.
The Thrill of the Hunt
After several close calls and missed opportunities, persistence paid off. Katey and Christen each successfully harvested a pronghorn buck after hours of stalking and careful positioning. This DIY success was a testament to how far they’ve come since their first mule deer hunt. Reflecting on the adventure, they celebrated not just the harvest but their growth as hunters. Observing the graceful movements of the antelope reminded them of why they had pursued this challenge. They declared it one of their favorite hunts to date.
