That’s a question scientists in Russia’s vast Siberian region are struggling to answer following this strange phenomena where the ground does just that: ripples back in waves when you step on it. The top theory is the precedence of underground methane pockets which are filling up beneath the loose soil after the pressure has cracked the harder earth away. Whatever the cause, the precedent is a dangerous one which scientists are hoping to better understand and learn to alleviate in the coming months of study.
