Sootch00 Review: S&W Governor Review

Smith and Wesson introduced the Governor in 2011. It was inspired by the Taurus Judge which is a very popular firearm. One of the big differences between the two is that the Governor uses a scandium alloy frame with a 6 round cylinder which makes it very light. The Judge uses a steel frame with a five round cylinder.

Smith and Wesson is world renowned as a gun manufacturer. They have been producing firearms for 159 years which gives them a lot of experience and a big track record. One of the things about the revolver though is that it has fallen out of the self defense option. Semi automatic pistols have come into play and taken over that area.

The cylinder on the Governor is huge. The reason for this is because of the .410 shells. They are massive and come in all types of rounds. Unlike the Judge, the Governor is able to take .45 ACP rounds and is able to take moon clips. This is a game changer. .45 ACP rounds are much more reasonable and being able to drop that moon clip in makes for quicker reload actions.

Putting .410 shells into the Governor is a huge change in ballistics. It is a very effective self defense round and packs a punch. Be careful when you buy your rounds because the Governor won’t hold over a 2-½ inch round.

The frame of the Governor is a z-frame. That has to do with the size of the cylinder. The Governor is a double single action revolver. This means that you can fire the revolver either with or without the hammer cocked. If you dry fire it, it will be a lot harder to shoot than if you decide to fire it in single action and pull the trigger back. The double action helps with keeping the gun safe so that you don’t inadvertently pull the trigger.

To open up the cylinder, push the cylinder release forward and the cylinder comes out. It is a really smooth action.

The u-notch rear sight works great with the tritium sight at the front. The sights are easy to see and with that white dot at the front, you are really able to connect with the target quickly.

The Governor is a great option for either open or concealed carry. There are different holster options for both your waste or pocket.

You can buy the moon clips for the Governor in either groups of six or groups of two. The groups of two allow for the addition of other types of rounds to be inserted into the firearm while still being able to use a moon clip. If you are using a .45 ACP round, make sure to use a moon clip so that the bullet will sit in the right place.

The Governor has a stainless steel cylinder and a stainless steel barrel. The scandium alloy frame has a finish to match the stainless steel color of the cylinder and barrel.

The msrp of the Governor is $869, but you can probably find it at your local gun retailer for just over the $750 mark.

The Governor is a great self defense gun, hiking gun, home defense gun, and car gun. Up close and personal, the Governor is devastating.
