When this enormous humpback whale swam closer to Aussie photographer Beau Pilgrim while on a dive off the coast of Vava’u, Tonga, he knew he was about to capture some amazing footage. But this whale breached the surface of the water right in front of Pilgrim and crashed back down mere inches away from him as he desperately paddled away from it. While humpback whales are not terribly aggressive toward humans, a fully grown whale can weigh in at almost 80,000 pounds on average, meaning that splashdown nearly turned Pilgrim into an sea pancake. We’re lucky that it missed him and we got to see this incredible footage instead.
