Rick Swope didn’t expect to be a hero when he visited the Detroit Zoo one fateful day in 1990. While viewing the ape exhibit with his wife, Swope watched a 135 lb chimpanzee fall into the water. Knowing the ape’s unique anatomy makes swimming difficult if not impossible, Swope jumped into the ape exhibit. His bravery paid off as Swope pulled 18-year-old Jo-Jo to safety.
