When it comes to bartering and trading, security is of the utmost importance. Think about whether you trust the person you are bartering and trading with; do you want them at your house? A marketplace is one of the most secure ways to bring your goods. In some other countries, they have marketplaces where they can barter and trade.
These items are great for bartering in an SHTF situation:
Precious Metals: Precious metals gives you a known value. These metals are reasonably priced and the value can be easily identified. Silver and gold are not necessarily for investing, but they can protect your wealth. It retains your value.
Food: Food is one of the most important things that people are going to need. Think about quantities; you want a smaller amount to be able to give out. The larger the quantity, the more expensive and more you are going to trade out. Salt and sugar are a necessity to have for your diet. Napkins: Toilet paper, paper towels, and diapers are all going to be good barter items. One recommendation is cloth diapers for children.
Cleaning Products: Bleach and soap are such versatile tools for bartering. You can clean your water, your clothes, and other surfaces. Hygiene is essential in an SHTF situation.
Firestarters: Matches, lighters, and any other fire starters are all essential items. In these situations, you are going to have to be able to cook and start a fire. Fire is one of the essential survival tools. Lighters will run out of fuel; this will allow you to get more business with recurring customers. Also, grab some candles.
Batteries: Grab your standard batteries. Good quality batteries will last longer. They can last up to 10 years in storage.
Tarps: Tarps will allow for shelter and survival.
