Biologist Pacifica Sommers spotted this amazing display of the natural order while trekking through the Rincon Mountains of Saguaro National Park in Arizona and just had to capture it on video. Thanks to her amazingly detailed and supremely informed commentary, we know that this giant water bug snagged this garter snake measuring almost three times its size just after the bug had molted out of its old skin, after Sommers accidentally startled the snake into slipping below the waterline. From there, the bug shoved its mouth through the snake’s skin and began to secrete digestive juices into the still living snake, holding onto it as the reptile thrashed futilely for its very life.
