You may recognize that charred black block of “carbon foam” as something you’ve seen before. If you’re having trouble remembering where, it was on the EXTERIOR of THE SPACE SHUTTLE. That’s right. You can make your own atmospheric heat-shielding at home with a blowtorch and the most surprising of materials…WONDER BREAD. Now, NASA uses a much different method for making their heat-shielding, but this is a very, very similar process with very similar results. All in your kitchen.
