Springfield Armory XD-S Mod.2 OSP – Karen Hunter Review
Springfield Armory has just announced the newest edition to their XD-S line of guns, the XD-S MOD.2 OSP. Springfield has taken their most popular single-stack EDC and made it optics ready. The XD-SMod.2 OSP comes with a factory milled slide for low-profile, direct mounting of compact optics. Springfield is also going a step further and providing an optional Crimson Trace micro red dot optic making this gun ready to go right out of the box.
The number of shooters opting to carry with an optic is increasing, but there are pros and cons to this decision. Personally, I believe that if you are utilizing an optic it is best to have it co-witnessed with your iron sights. Although technology today is advanced it is far from fail proof. Should your optic go down, having to re-acquire your sight picture will put you at a disadvantage. Springfield understood this reasoning when designing this gun. The XD-S Mod.2 OSP accepts the smallest micro red dots on the market today. These optics mount directly to the slide and sit low enough to effectively utilize iron sights if the optic goes down; so, it is naturally co-witnessed. An additional benefit to being low profile is increased ease of concealment.

The XD-S Mod.2 OSP is chambered in 9mm and is a single-stack design measuring in at only 0.9” wide. It features a 3.3” hammer forged barrel and a passive grip safety that immediately readies the gun to fire when gripped – yet keeps the gun safe during carry. The additional drop safety in the striker block works in conjunction with the grip safety. The Mod.2 frame has a unique anti-slip texture that works well with the undercut trigger guard and extended beavertail to enhance the shooters grip. A white dot front sight paired with an anti-glare serrated rear offers quick target acquisition. The Mod.2 has incorporated a seamless polymer cover plate that is easily installed when an optic is not present adding additional slide serrations. Other features of the Mod.2 include an ambi magazine release and a loaded chamber indicator to confirm the chamber status. This gun ships with a concealable 7-round magazine with pinky extension and an extended 9-round magazine with grip extension for increased capacity. An /4”8-round magazine is also available for purchase.

My time running the XD-S Mod.2 OSP went well. I found this gun to be comfortable and easy to shoot. Obviously running the Crimson Trace red dot enabled very quick target acquisition as well as fast follow-up shots. I believe the area this gun will truly shine lies in the ease of concealment it offers. The Mod.2 is smooth, snag free and having a very low-profile optic makes concealed carry comfortable and achievable. I paired this gun with my Alexo Athletica Signature leggings and had zero issues with concealment. If you are looking for a gun to conceal carry that is complete with an optic, the Mod.2 would be a great option. Paired with Springfield’s uncompromised lifetime warranty the XD-S Mod.2 OSP is definitely worth your time and consideration.
